Pet Photography

Today I spent an hour photographing a friend's dog while dog sitting. I wanted to focus mostly on action shots but I also got some more portrait style images.

This image was shot at ISO 400, F5.0, and a shutter speed of 1/750 sec. It has a great amount of action which is frozen well. The background is blurred out from a shallow depth of field so it does not take away from the image at all. The white flowers in the background break the background up enough to make it interesting and not a solid color.

This image was shot at ISO 400, F5.6, and 1/320 sec shutter speed. The image was frozen very well with a good amount depth of field. The dog was turning back from catching a ball so it was not as fast of a movement but still fast enough to need a fast shutter speed.

This image is a ISO 400, F11, and a shutter speed of 1/125 sec shutter speed. A faster shutter speed would have given me a better frozen image but I was panning with the dog and managed to keep the dog mostly in focus and blurring out the background giving a strong impression of motion.

This image was just a closeup of the dog to look nice. It is an ISO 200, F7.1, and 1/125 sec shutter speed. I think the depth of field works well in this image because it has enough depth to show you a good amount of detail in the immediate grass but blurs out the grass that is further away. You know what the grass looks like so it does not need to take away your focus.

This image is an ISO 640, F13, and 1/125 sec shutter speed. This image just caught my attention because of the expression on the dogs face. I like the large depth of field but I would have preferred to have a shallow depth of field and a lower ISO.

  1. The third photo here is amazingly good for an in motion object. Reminds me of when I shoot video what's like when you pan.

  2. Panning is frustrating to me. I have so much trouble getting them right. I have shot a lot more that just did not come out at all. But I am improving the more I try. I would like to see any videos you have done. I have seen some before I know but I am interested in more.

  3. Well most of my professional videos are currently in the process of being transferred to our new site (college newspaper) but for all my proof of concept vids and overall silliness head over to...
